The Tubes were an amalgamation of two local bands in Phoenix, the Beans, & the Red White & Blues. With the addition of vocalist Fee Waybill and an ever-growing entourage of dancers, they gradually built up a stage-show blending satire & theatrics, which had become their trademark by the time they toured Britain in 1977. The music press loved them, but the news media lumped them in with the punk music of the time, being quick to criticise the band for the more outrageous parts of their stage act, whilst ignoring the fact they were accomplished musicians.
